Guidelines for Paper
Your project paper should be 5-10 pages, single spaced. You will write it using the format of a professional paper. For examples, see the NASA ADS (link available under Docs & Assignments on mygateway). The elements of a professional paper are (1) title and authors with affiliations, (2) abstract, (3) introduction, (4) data and analysis section (5) results, (6) discussion and conclusions, (7) acknowledgements, (8) references.
Formatting:
Single spaced, 12 pt times or times new roman font, 1 inch margins
The abstract should be no more than 150 words and should have left and right margins of 1.5 inches. The abstract should give a very brief overview of the project you are discussing, including the telescope, type of CCD, and type of data (i.e. BV photometry) and a brief overview of the results. If you choose a modeling paper, you will discuss the type of model, computer code, or other relevant information.
The introduction should give background information about the topic. For example, if you are covering the topic of T Tauri stars, you would discuss some general star formation and where T Tauri stars fit into the star formation process (with references).
The data and analysis section should describe the telescope and CCD, the data acquisition procedure, and reduction procedure for papers describing observational projects and the coding for theoretical work. Since you did not do this work, this section can be brief. The results section should include what the researchers found, including any necessary plots or tables. You may reproduce a plot or image from your paper to illustrate your points (with proper citation). This is the meat of the paper. Your discussion/conclusion section should discuss what the results of the paper mean for the study and what needs to be done for future work. This is important. Do you understand how this focused work fits into the bigger picture?
The acknowledgements must include thanking anybody that assisted you (there may not be any acknowledgements for such a report paper, but if you talk to another professor for assistance, you should thank that person here).
References must follow standard guidelines. In your text you would say, for example
Wilking et al. (2007) found that blah…. Or This object is known to have a B-V color of 0.65 (Author et al. 2006).
In the references section, you must have every reference in your paper in alphabetical order as
Alberts, N., Steamer, P., and Gloss, J. 2006, ApJ, 516, 445
(list authors, last name first followed by initial, year, journal, volume #, page #).
All figures, tables, etc need to appear in numerical order in the same order as they are referenced in the body of the paper. While it may seem repetitive, the information describing each figure must be in both the figure caption and the body of the text. All symbols must be described in the figure captions.
