Goal:
Summarize the scientific research process
Critique research findings and designs
Write an APA style research paper

Your final paper should include (in this order)
:
 Title Page
Title—10 to 12 words
o Author name
Affiliation
o Running head—maximum 50 characters
Your running head should also appear in the header of each page

 Abstract—between 150 and 250 words

 Introduction
No introduction heading, instead, the title of the paper should be centered on the first page of the introduction
Hypotheses should be clearly articulated at the end of the introduction section of
the paper.

– Writing this draft of the introduction will prepare you to write a wellrounded introduction for your final paper. Specifically, you will begin to learn how to use APA
format for writing style, organization, and citations. APA style is not the same as what you use
for a typical English Lit paper—it is more fact-based and unemotional (think Spock or Sheldon).
Pay attention to how the research articles that you cite are written to get a sense for the
appropriate writing and citation style.

The group projects this semester will deal with how group membership (ingroup, outgroup) and
diffusion of responsibility combine to facilitate outgroup helping. The basic idea of the paper is
that people are typically less likely to help people from outgroups than from ingroups. We will
test whether people will be just as likely to help an outgroup member as an ingroup member
when a) empathy is high, compared to low OR b) diffusion of responsibility is low, compared to
high [broad hypothesis to include in first paragraph].

implicit bystander effect. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 83, 843-853.

For each article, you must review a) what the authors thought—their hypotheses or main
argument, b) what they did—their method including their IVs and DVs, and c) what they found
—their main results and conclusions. Make sure to relate that article back to the big picture
purpose of your paper. Pull out what you think are the most important pieces from each article to
make an argument for why we should be studying these variables as they relate to helping
members of an outgroup. You do not need to report every detail of each paper, only the pieces
that help you set up the framework for your experiment. This is a persuasive piece, based on
facts derived from empirical studies, about why it is important for us to look at these variables as
facilitators or inhibitors of outgroup helping

 Method and Results section
– For this assignment, you should write both the Method and the Results sections of your paper.
You already know the methods that you used, and I have calculated the results. In class, we will
go over the measures from our studies and the results so that you know what to write.

 Discussion section
– For this assignment, you should write the Discussion section of your paper, which is the final
major section left to write. This section should summarize your paper’s findings, connect your
results to the previous studies that you discussed in the Introduction, provide strengths and
limitations of your study, and end with a broad conclusion.

 References

 Figure with caption
-This should be cited in the paper

Your paper should be double spaced with 1-inch margins on the top, bottom, and both sides. In
addition, you should use 12 point Times New Roman Font. The abstract, references, and figure
should be on their own separate pages. However, the different sections of the paper (method,
results, and discussion) should be continued on the same page as the previous section.
