Second -Wave Civilizations”. Your essay must critically assess all of the primary source documents
provided in that section of the booklet and must address the following questions: What features of
civilization, described in Chapter 3, do these documents illustrate. Also, notice the “point of view” from
which documents are written? How those sourcesin the booklet present range of practices -political power
vs. political authority and religious -what evidence you can point to in these sources for your argument?
Whatsimilarities and differences between and among those civilizations can you infer from the booklet’s
primary source documents and textbook chapter 3 (empires of Persia, Greece, Rome, China, India)? How
might you account for the differences? You can also refer to “Working with Evidence- Perceptions of
Outsiders in the Ancient World” (choose one account), how might the relations among different peoples
affect perceptions of those people? Also, reflect on how would life for people have been different in each
of river-valley civilizations we have studied thus far? Imagine being members of the elite
in each of these societies and as non-elite person in each of these civilizations in turn. For which group, the
elite or non-elite, would life have been more different?
