Explain the strengths and weaknesses of the literature that was found and identify any gaps in the literature.

Instructions: This assignment is to be written as an APA formatted paper, 4 pages min – 5 pages max (excluding title and references).
1. Find at least 7 articles that pertain to your project problem, topic, and theory. (It is not necessary that each study you find uses the same exact theory you have chosen). Project is Dialysis Cathether Removal to prevent infection.
2. Write your APA paper as a thematic literature review – NOT as an annotated bibliography (see resources posted to the module and given below)
-Your paper should not address each article individually. Rather, pull information out from each source using themes that weave together to explain the identified problem.
-Your paper should contain the following sections:
Introduction and thesis. Provide a solid introduction to the paper to introduce the topic and the proposed project. Conclude the intro with a thesis/purpose statement that identifies the purpose of the paper (e.g. This paper will discuss the theoretical framework of the proposed project, provide a thematic summary of the literature, discuss the attributes of the available evidence and the implications of the proposed project for nursing practice.)
Theoretical Framework. Discuss the theory chosen for the project and describe how it relates to or frames the project. (You may use information from your PDSA Part 1.)
Literature Summary. 2-3 sections/paragraphs that discuss the themes of each of the articles (use level 1/ topic headings for each theme). This should not be an annotated bibiliography (see below)!
Discussion. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of the literature that was found and identify any gaps in the literature.
Implications. Describe how the research (or lack thereof) relates to the project and explain the importance of the project for nursing practice.
Conclusion. Provide a solid concluding paragraph for the paper.
3. Submit your paper by the assigned due date. Upload each of the articles used in the comments section for the assignment.
4. A literature review should not contain any references to the researcher/student, whether in the first, second, or third person. This kind of paper ONLY talks about the information and that is it!
Resources for help:
-There are several resources located in the module to assist with writing the literature review.
-Visit the Writing Studio (See the Writing Help icon in the course navigation) for access to tutors and professors who can help with academic writing.
-Difference between annotated bibliography and thematic literature review:
Thematic Literature Review (DO)
Topic: Implementing Falls Education
Annotated Bibliography (Don’t!)
Topic: Implementing Falls Education
Organizes the literature into different themes. Discusses each research study/article individually.
Sources are integrated into paragraphs based on the topic. Sources are discussed alphabetically.
Introduces a topic, synthesizes sources as topics are explained, and concludes with an overall summary Each item is discussed individually with a summary that explains the credibility of the research.
Example: The following topic headers might be used:
Consequences of Falls in Care Settings
Falls education is of vital importance in care settings as the implications of a fall for patients and staff are many. Long & Tall (2020) conducted a study and found that among patients who suffered a fall with injury in an acute care setting, the average length of stay was increased. It is estimated that falls cost hospitals $ annually (AHRQ, 2018)… In addition to patient injury, nursing patient-contact hours are also increased. Nurses round on falls patients…(Thomas & Jones, 2017).
Impact of Falls Education for Nursing Staff
Example: The same topic headers might be used, but the information is not woven together:
Consequences of Falls in Care Settings
Falls education is of vital importance in care settings. According to the AHRQ (2018), hospitals spend approximately $…annually on falls. This results in additional patient-contact care hours required, which must be absorbed by the hospital (AHRQ, 2018).
Long & Tall (2020) have similar findings. The researchers conducted a study of falls data in 100 hospitals across the mainland U.S. There were approximately …documented falls between the years 2017-2019 (Long &Tall, 2020). The study results suggest….
Nursing patient contact hours are another consequence of falls in the care setting (Thomas & Jones, 2017)….

Literature Review Rubric revised 3/2019
