Final Project: Re-imagine and Reflect

Assignment
Prompt: This project will draw on your creativity and ability to translate your
writing into a totally different Genre.
Think back to one of the three assignments we’ve turned in: Your First
Reflection, The Narrative Essay, or The Definition Essay. Select one of these
assignments to focus on. This can be the assignment you enjoyed the most, or
perhaps the one you’d like to explore further. It can also be one that had a
topic you enjoyed looking into.

Assignment Goal: The goal is to re-envision one of your assignments
and transform it into a completely new genre. You will need to think about both
the original audience and the original genre before continuing on your
reflection, as you will be trying to reach a new audience with your new
interpretation of the assignment. You will rely on a sample of that genre to
guide your project.

This assignment should:
● Re-envision
a completed assignment of yours. You will be reimaging your piece from a
totally new, unique perspective.
● Look
toward the different genres that we’ve explored in class and use them as
inspiration for your re-imagining. (Satire, Speech, etc.)
● Make you
think about how you can reach multiple audiences in different, unique ways.
● Build and
develop your analytical and reflective writing skills.
● Explore
the more creative side of English writing.
● Touch on
the themes of the class in some way (family, culture, or education).

Guidelines:
You will be converting one of your pieces of writing to a totally
different unique genre. For example, if you wrote on how culture ties into
race, you may create a collage of pictures that visualize your culture. If you
wrote about a nostalgic moment in your life, perhaps you will write diary
entries to highlight that part of your life. A larger list of examples are listed
below.

This assignment is broken up into two parts:

Using your original
text, you will look for a model of the genre you want to emulate and
convert your piece into that genre, targeting a new audience. You can be as creative as you’d like
here! There is an extensive list of genres listed below. Your submission
must be no more than one page, either written or visual, and it must be
based on one of the themes in the class (culture, family, or education).

After re-imagining your
writing, you will write a reflection of at least 750 words that describes
your new audience, it’s purpose, and the genre of your re-envisioned text.
You can explain where you borrowed inspiration from, and how the piece
came to be. Questions to consider in your reflection are…

● Why did
you choose this new genre? What is your new audience?

● How does
your chosen genre make sense for your original text?

● What did
the reference model you chose teach you about your genre? How is it organized?

● What are
some differences between your original text and your re-envisioned submission?
How did you target your audience differently in each piece?

● How did
your re-envisioned piece appeal to your audience? Emotionally? Logically? Both?
Explain your decisions.

Steps to take before writing:
● Think
about the themes of your original assignment, and how you’re going to
incorporate them.
● Think
about which genre you want to work with. A huge list of examples is listed
below. If some other genre comes to mind, feel free to use it!
● Think
about how you’re going to re-envision your piece. Envision means to picture in
your mind, to imagine. To re-envision something, then, is to picture something
or imagine it again.

Requirements:

●
A one-page
re-imagining of your piece, either visually or written. If you are recording
something, it must be at-least two minutes long. (speech, video, etc.) It must
resemble the model of your newly chosen genre.
●
A 750 word double spaced reflection on your
re-imagined piece, including:
o
A clear sense of purpose, genre, and audience in
your re-envisioned piece.
o
Emulates the conventions of the chosen genre.
o
The re-imagined piece has substantial changes
made to accommodate a new audience and genre.
o There
should be signs of proofreading and adherence
to the MLA format.

List of
Potential Genres: diary, speech, poster, comedy script, satirical
piece, public safety warning, advertisement, painting, how-to guide, play or
movie, fairy tale, nursery, myth, folk-tale, rhyme, picture book, local news
report, obituary, tabloid article, recipe, knitting (quilt?), paper mache,
painting, newspaper article, album with song titles, video, etc. (If something
isn’t on this list and you wanna try it, please reach out to me and ask! It’ll
probably be fine.)
