Paper
#2
Prompt:
Imagine for this paper that you are working for a
school board candidate. She has found
some interesting articles on education (those we read for this unit), but she
doesn’t have time to read them all, and she needs your help synthesizing what she
has have found. In this paper, you
should form and develop an argument about education in response to one of the
following questions, keeping in mind that your boss is interested only in the
experts’ opinions, not your personal opinions.
The answer to the question you choose should be in your thesis, and your
paper should prove that your answer is correct. Your thesis should not just
restate what one of authors says; rather, you should synthesize several authors’
ideas to make your point.
1. What problems exist in the American
educational system?
2. Would the Finnish education system
work in America? Why or why not?
3. What solutions are there for the
problems of American education?
Requirements:
-Your paper should follow all the APA style rules we
have discussed and all other writing rules we have discussed.
-It should contain several in-text citations and have
a references page that matches those citations.
-It should be at least 3.5 pages, and no more than five
5 pages, excluding the cover and references pages. An abstract is not required. Papers that do
not meet the 3.5 page minimum will have proportional points deducted. For this paper, each half page is worth 21.5
points.
-You should not use personal experience in this paper.
The use of the word “I” is not allowed in this paper.
-You must use at least two essays from the list of
education essays we read and then discussed in class. You must also use one of the supplemental
sources on Ivy Learn, for a total of three sources minimum. You may use more. Missing one source will
result in a 30 point deduction. If you
are missing more than one source, you can’t do synthesis; that would result in
a grade of 0.
-No outside sources are permitted for this paper.
Please
indicate the number of the question you are answering on the cover page of your
paper, on the last line.
Process:
You will have several opportunities to receive
feedback on this paper and revise based on that feedback. You will turn in a
rough draft for peer review and receive feedback from peers (10 points for your
draft and your participation; you must be present to earn peer review points). Then, you will turn in a rough draft to the
instructor and receive feedback (4 points).
After revising, you will submit a final draft for a grade to the
instructor (150 points).
If
you would like chance to improve your score, there is an optional bonus
resubmission available. To be eligible,
you must turn in all three of the drafts mentioned above and make revisions at
each stage. You may not earn back points lost due to turning in a late
paper. At the instructor’s discretion,
tutoring may be required for a bonus resubmission.
