will not grade essays that are longer than 5 pages in length (again, not including the
reference list).
• You must cite from at least 5 quality sources in the essay (one of which should be the course
textbook).
Required Text: Duck, S., & McMahan, D. T. (2021). Communication in everyday life: A survey of communication (4th edition). Sage: Los Angeles, CA.
• You must use APA style for citing your sources and for creating your reference list. APA style is not necessary for any other formatting aspect of this essay.
• You must use 12-point font size, one inch margins on all sides, and double-spacing
throughout your essay.
• You must submit your Essay as a Word (2007 or newer) document.
Each essay you write should include a thesis statement that tells the reader what (and in what
order) main points are included in the essay.

Option 3 (from Duck & McMahan, Chapter 9)- Top employers from around the globe
argue that the ability to work effectively in teams is one of the most sought-after skills they
look for in new employees. At the same time, more than two decades of teaching college has
revealed one thing that almost all college students have in common: they hate group work, or
at the very least, avoid it whenever possible. How do we reconcie these conflicting
perspectives? In an essay exploring the subject of group work and leadership as derived from
working in teams, take a stand on whether or not group work should be privileged over
individual effort or vice versa, making sure to include specific examples and research
throughout.
