2. he actions of policymakers, businesses, and individuals in response to the coronavirus pandemic demonstrate a different pattern of action than we see in response to environmental issues like climate change. What are the similarities and differences between the responses to the pandemic and responses to environmental concerns? How far should the government go in regulating the economy in the name of halting climate change? On a spectrum of “leave the solution entirely to the private sector” on one end to “halt all damaging economic activity even if it results in economic depression” on the other, where do students place themselves? How do they justify the trade-off, either in terms of potential environmental or economic catastrophe? Are there any lessons to be learned by governmental action in managing the pandemic that can be applied to environmental economics?
3. The American welfare state is very generous to some groups and much less generous to others. For example, the elderly receive many benefits from the welfare state, whereas young people receive relatively few benefits other than education. Likewise, the middle class enjoys many secure benefits, whereas the poor’s access to benefits is much less certain. How did these patterns of social welfare policy become established over time? In what ways do these benefit patterns reflect American values? Should these patterns be changed? Why or why not?
4. American foreign policy has in some ways changed dramatically and in other ways displayed remarkable consistency across the Bush, Obama, and Trump presidencies. How have the foreign policies of these administrations differed and how have they remained the same? What constraints are imposed on presidents when they try to change course from their predecessors? Do students prefer one president’s approach over the others? How have the foreign policy problems facing America changed across these presidential administrations?
