Position Paper Critique
1. Do you have a thesis statement? What is it? Does it both indicate the subject-issue and the writer’s position upon it? Where does it appear? Does it pass the thesis test (meaning: it isn’t a fact, not based in emotion, supportable by you and limited in scope)?
2. Is background or current status material provided if necessary? Is it clear and purposeful?
3. Are there at least three sub-points? What are they? In the body of the paper, are those sub-points well supported and amply developed with evidence?
4. Does the paper maintain a focus upon the thesis? Does it wander? Does it appear to contradict itself?
5. Is the evidence cited enough and convincing enough to make a convincing argument? Does it need more? Less? Are the sources appropriately integrated into the text parenthetically?
6. Is the introduction engaging and purposeful? Is the conclusion forceful and purposeful?
7. Is there a WORKS CITED page and does it look appropriate? Are they alphabetically ordered?
Is there evidence that each of these listed sources are used in the paper itself? Are the listed sources parallel to the essay?
8. Is this essay argumentative in mode or is it a report? It should not be a report.
9. Do you consider your opponents’ positions? Do you refute their major points?
10. Is there a well thought out title? Is it appropriate to task?
11. Are you using MLA Manuscript form?
