Our human spirit is buoyant in ways that we may not even imagine. Though, the spirit that we embody is crucial in the healing process of any problem or pain. Specifically looking at trauma, us humans often relive the events of our past over and over again. Not only our spirit, but our body and souls are affected by what seems to be our memories. An example of this can include trauma survivors for they will actually “spend most of their time outside of their body” (Swets). This is due to the fact that they do not want the reminder of what it once felt like to be inside. With the use of yoga and mediation, we find that healing these wounds is something we can tackle with time and practice. Yoga is a series of “bilateral integration- right and left
Furthermore, meditation is another way of healing the mind by allowing the brain to rewire. This is necessary to bring humans back from focusing so much on the past and future, to the present time. By training the mind to be in the now, emotional balance can be reached. Scientifically, stress hormones and blood pressure decrease as brain waves increase releasing dopamine. This allows for clarity and concentration to be improved. Both yoga and meditation assist in the spirit’s resilience by bringing the human perception to the present. Meditation comes into play due to the fact that it is at the time when we are suffering the most that we can have deep spiritual transformations and begin to feel that there is a higher play of energy at work. We go beyond our ego and into our heart to realize what matters most in our lives. This brings us to center ourselves, thoughts and total being.
Not only in trauma do we see these results. It has been shown that spiritual practices can minimize and often subside the effects of depression. Often when people are depressed, they feel as if they cannot be fully existing. Their minds are distracted, blurring reality and sending them into a zone of nothing-ness. Therefore, coming to terms with depression involves mindfulness. It is said that “since the turn of the millennium, nearly 4,000 studies have been published on the usefulness of mindfulness in mental health” (Anderson). You may be wondering how exactly mindfulness helps to diminish depression. The obsessive thoughts that run through a depressed mind often need to break, as the rest of a solution will follow. Breaking this loop comes with changing the mindset and repeatedly using these tactics. Without the use of medicine, a therapist
When immense difficulties are brought into our lives, we are called to confront these challenges, transitioning it to be a time when we are truly brought to our knees in appreciating the simplest parts of life. According to the novel Healing Wise by Susan S. Weed she states that, “problems, pains, diseases, and illnesses are not fixed, or cured, or even brought into balance, in the Wise Woman tradition, but honored, supported, respected for their truth, nourished, and added onto the truth of the whole being” (Weed 13). What can be understood from this idea is that dilemmas are underlined as unfixable in their entirety. In question of this thought, there is a conclusion that problems, pains and illnesses can most certainly be reversed or even cured. We can reach this greatness of resolution, due to our resilient human spirit, miraculous human body and limitless human soul. movements. The action of yoga connects the right brain to the left, rebuilding broken connections and bringing memories to the surface of conscientiousness” (Swets). Through yoga, the mind is able to settle in a place where these memories can no longer be a scary reminder, but a comfortable one.may be somebody who can enrich these ideas into our heads. Starting out as a minimal coping mechanism, altering the human spirit is what can ultimately lead to the total transformation of the mind.
Besides the power of our spirit, we also have the addition of our wondrous bodies. With great powers of reconstruction, our bodies actually have the ability to rebuild itself. This is a concept that is often both underestimated and underappreciated. In an article written by Dr. Li, a healthy mind is achieved “when the body is able to protect itself against imbalances, breakdowns, and foreign invaders. The human body has evolved powerful defense systems that help it maintain optimal physical, mental and emotional states” (Li). Dr. Li mentions this concept in referencing a common hurt that we all have experienced: cutting your knee. When an individual undergoes an injury such as skinning the knee, the individual “witness[es] the body’s healing process first hand: the body clotting, the formation of a scab, then blood vessels bringing oxygen for healing, and finally the formation of new skin. It’s frankly amazing how the body can heal itself without any help from the outside” (Li). Our body can be healed from disease and even brought back to be healthier and better constructed than it once was before. Bodies can even fix themselves on a greater level when getting accustomed to not taking prescribed medications. Without taking them, we are conditioned to depend upon healing naturally. Our bodies will increase their intolerance to pain and soon we are close to unbothered by sickness.
Knowing that the human body can in fact heal itself, the Wise Woman tradition contains concepts on this fact that are most certainly controversial, but also some agreeable. This is shown on page 13 where it states that “nourishment helps us incorporate all of our experiences. Each problem is acknowledged as a potential thirteenth step to transformation and growth,” (Weed, 13). We have seen more recently with the COVID-19 virus that while it is similar to the flu, we have lived excluded from the rest of the world in fear of contracting what we are not immune to already. Though, immunity stands as a form of nourishment, training your body and building natural defense mechanisms against disease and sickness with COVID-19 being just one example. The human body is much more likely to fight off an infection if previously exposed. Thus, the more unknown that the human body faces, the more familiar it becomes.
Transitioning to the resilience of the human soul, we cannot only overcome physical illness by training our bodies to become accustomed, but we can also reach a great sense of healing from the process of relieving such heartbreak. As an example, when we go through the steps of a relationship coming to its close, we often experience emotions of detachment, separation and learning a new norm, as what you previously had known is now a false reality. Heartbreak, unfortunately, is in fact a part of the human experience. One of the underlying aspects is acute stress that after being recognized, can actually become the start of the healing process. According to an article on overcoming heartbreak, it is crucial to “set up healthy habits for an ongoing, healthy lifestyle” (The Science Behind a Broken Heart), hence training our bodies to recognize this new norm. When you are heartbroken, it can be easy to withdraw from your regular life, but getting out and about, spending time with positive and supportive people, eating well and exercise can all help boost your mood and stressors, distracting you from your upset. These are all ideas surrounding nourishment, as incorporating these changes into your life can actually recover a broken heart.
When death encounters the human soul, it is believed to be taken to another life, one known to be greater than earth itself. Most humans, depending on personal beliefs, have been taught that when bodies have been laid to rest, the spirit is no longer attached, but it has bounced back in all its glory. From the book, The Philosophy of Progress, “all human beings have eternallife. No matter how strongly intellectuals may reject the idea, our souls are eternal; we are beings living in an eternal chain that consists of past, present and future” (Okawa). This can lead to the completion that death is not the end, but that when we do pass, our souls can most certainly be resilient in living a life beyond life.
In final analysis, these three elements, all intertwined, can be brought through the greatest of hardship reaching the greatest outcome. As long as we are alive, we will always have hope. After the storm, the grounds clear, welcoming the beauty of new life which comes from going through our own pain, conflict, disease or illness, we can have healing and can even go to be a beacon of light, helping others with their own. This is the beauty of being human: resilience, transformation and hope. Contrary to the Wise Women belief, extraordinarily, the human spirit, body and soul are capable of converting problems, pains, diseases and illnesses into rebirth, recovery and a life rebuilt.
