This second essay project will serve as a review of all the writing skills learned for more sophisticated writing challenges in the third writing project, memoir.
The basic task of this assignment is to compare and contrast items of your choice based on a set of criteria that define each item. In other words, you will choose a category of items (fast food restaurants, for example) and you will determine which criteria allow you to judge the merits of fast food restaurants (burger options, french fry quality, playground equipment, personal associations and sentiment, etc.). You will then compare all the fast food restaurants with which you have experience, using those defining criteria as your basis for judgment.
This project will proceed along the following steps:
1. Identify a category of items from which you will choose a favorite. This should be something with which you have significant personal experience.
2. Identify a list of criteria that define general items in such a category. Restaurants can be evaluated in terms of their menu options, prices, ambiance, location, etc.
3. Choose your favorite item from within your category. This should be based on your evaluation of the criteria listed in step two.
4. Apply each criterion to each item in the category. Judge each item based on each criterion. Show how they are similar and how they are different. For example, how are the fries at each restaurant? Good at Burger King, mediocre at McDonald’s, non-existent at Taco Bell?
5. Determine how they all compare, once all things have been considered. Your calculations done in step four will inevitably result in a sum that will reveal how you order your favorites and why. This will result in a ranking of all items considered.
6. Conclude by showing how your favorite sums to a greater number than the others. Other items in your category might be good, even very good, but something prevents you from considering them your favorite. Only one can be your favorite.
I choose McDonald, Burger King, Wendy’s and sonic
