GUIDELINES, FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS & GRADING CRITERIA FOR
WRITTEN PERFORMANCE ESSAYS INSTRUCTIONS
1. Please write your name,
ID number, instructor’s name at the top right side of the essay.
2. Please give your Essay a title reflecting the performing groups
or individuals and the type of performance (opera, symphony concert, choir
concert, etc.)
Essays must be at least
2 full pages long, maximum 4 pages, font size 11, double spaced. A full 2nd page is needed to be
counted. A partial 2nd page will result in
points deducted for not meeting the minimum length. The performances for Essays
must be chosen from the videos linked below.

Please note that it is
required to watch the full length of the
Performance video chosen
for your Essay and by submitting your
Document you state that
you have done so. Failure to watch the full performance and describing only
part of it can result in the
Essay being rejected
GUIDELINES and
SUGGESTIONS for ESSAYS
The following questions
should be answered by the essay.
1. The basic facts;
name of performing groups and individual
performers. How many
sections, acts, pieces were performed. Was there
a conductor?
2. Describe the
instruments heard at the performance, identify the
families of instruments
they belong to, such as strings, woodwinds, brass,
percussion, keyboard,
electronic. If there were vocal performers, please
describe the voice
types they represented.
3. Describe the style,
stylistic era, period the music was written in, i.e.
20th century, Romantic,
Baroque, etc.
4. Identify each
composer whose music was heard by name. You may
include minimal
biographical information about the composer(s) but it
should be kept to a
minimum.
5. Choose one selection
of the performance for a detailed description
based on the elements
studied in class: dynamics, pitch, tone color and
style.
6. Besides selecting
one segment for detailed description, all
selections must be
included in the general description of the program.
Include a personal
account of the performance: what you liked
most and least. What
were your expectations and whether they have
been met.
