Prepare for your Interview
You’ll need to spend some time preparing your request to interview, the interview questions, and your plan for execution.
Before you reach out to anyone, be clear on your purpose of the interview. Do you want expert knowledge on your Wicked Problems topic? Do you want career information and guidance? Do you want both? You need to know before you ask for the interview.
For this assignment, create a document that includes all of the following:
Identify the person you are planning to interview, and give some details of that person’s professional life. Remember that you may not interview a current supervisor or close relative.
Their full name (first and last name):
Their profession:
Their job title:
The name of their place of business or employment:
Description of what type of business or organization this is:
City or country where they work:
Write a short paragraph explaining:
How and why you decided to interview this particular person.
What, specifically, you hope to learn from this interview. This can include information pertaining to your wicked problem, or information about the field itself, or information about the best way to go about getting into the field, including questions about necessary and appropriate education.
Write a draft email that you will send to your prospective interviewee. It is suggested that you use the draft email below. You should adjust it according to what is correct for your academic or career path.
Do not address it using someone’s full name, and do not address it using someone’s first name. Keep the tone of your correspondence professional. You should address women as “Ms.”, however, if you know that they are married and prefer to be called “Mrs.” you may use that instead. Never automatically refer to women as “Mrs.”
