The first Field Interview is designed to teach you how to develop an appropriate
schedule of questions, including primary and secondary questions, and conduct a
20-30 minute interview with a person who is currently working in a career in which
you are interested or a part of a graduate program you are interested in attending.
The purpose of the interview is to help you learn more about the content and
context of the interview process and gain valuable information that will help you in
your future and, hopefully, make an invaluable contact for your future!
The assignment consists of two main steps:
1. Develop an appropriate schedule of questions to use in your interview. You
should prepare both primary AND secondary questions. It is important to
remain flexible with your schedule during the interview and insert an
unplanned primary/secondary question when the need arises.

2. TYPE a 3-5 page summary (including a typed question schedule) of everything
you learned during the interview. You should discuss what you learned in the
responses to your questions and any insight you gained into the process of
conducting an interview.
TIPS:
1. We are going to spend class time talking about questions you might ask your
interviewee but, in general, it is important to ask questions you truly want to know
the answers to so you can really gain something from your interviewee other than
just the completion of the assignment.
2. Identify yourself as a Baylor student and that this interview is for a
class assignment. Also, schedule EARLY!!
3. While phone interviews are acceptable, face to face interviews are preferred
because they help you make a better impression. With that in mind, dress
appropriately for the occasion.
4. Be prepared! Be professional! This assignment provides each of you with a
golden opportunity to make a contact that could prove VERY useful in your future!
