Students will construct two (2) collisions, each featuring two (2) images, choosing one image from the more distant past (at least 150 years ago) and one image from the relative present/recent past (within the last 30 years).
For each collision, at least one of the images must be from the official collection of an art museum (see list below for suggestions). The second may also be from an official museum or may be from a non-museum source.
Each image collision pair must have one (1) full paragraph of annotation. The annotations will:
Briefly explain key formal elements and important iconographic details, along with the use, intent, viewership, and circulation of the images.
Explain and reflect on the reasoning behind the choices: how the images are encountered, expectations on the part of the viewers, the artists, and/or the exhibitors, why the collision is pertinent/salient, any social and political issues/questions raised through the collision.
In the annotations, students should attempt to incorporate ideas and reflections garnered during the course.
Thus, your completed assignment will include four images (two collisions), and two paragraphs of annotation (one paragraph each).
Submit your journal in PDF form and be sure to include at total of four (4) images at the best resolution possible. Submissions lacking images are considered incomplete.
