Video 1- Importance of Effort:
In this video they described learning as a process that people usually think should or wish would be easy. However, effective learning that actually helps you to absorb information is supposed to be challenging. I completely agree with this statement. For the majority of my young adult life, I tended to take the path with least resistance, It wasn’t until I started pushing myself outside of my comfort zone with no only education by life in general that I truly started to learn new information and adapt as well.
Video 2- Metacognition in practice:
In this video, she is explaining how the learning process is also done through personal experience and making connections to information that is already known. When learning new information, it is helpful to try and make connections to the information you are learning to other information that is already known. I think the message they are trying to convey in this video is to not attempt to absorb information with the outlook of believing the only source of learning the information is through what is being provided in the given texts or video lectures, but to consider outside sources of information as well. These outside sources of information can be through your own personal knowledge as well as other means of sources such as friends, family and associates/ acquaintances.
Video 3- Cultivating a Growth Mindset (Ted Talk):
This video provided some very interesting perspective on how we perceive our ability to learn. Referring to a high school in Chicago, she described the grading system as showing when a student failed a course as it not being described as a failure, but that they have not passed yet (Not Yet). I think this is a great way to provide some hope for a student that may be struggling with a certain subject, by not labeling that struggle as a failure, but rather goal that has just not yet been achieved. This could help lay a foundation for a more positive mindset about learning in the future in all areas of life. We often times struggle with obstacles in life dealing family, friends, jobs, relationships and whenever something doesn’t go in our favor, it can be damaging to our confidence and it is easy to write up those experiences as failures. When in fact, we should be looking at all shortfalls in our lives as learning experiences that are only helping us learn as we go and that will eventually get us to the end goal we desire.
