Full liberties on who you want to use as the “relationship”
First , choose a relationship you have had in the past, one that is no longer a strong presence in your life.
Second , track the relationship from its inception to its end (or to its current state) according to Knapp’s model of Relational Development. Specify certain communicative activities, events, and significant conversations that happened in each of the stages and explain why those actions belong to that stage of the model.
Remember : Try to talk about the actions and behaviors you identify from a communicative viewpoint. What do I mean by that? When you are identifying individual behaviors and actions, remember to explain what the behavior or action communicates, either to the other person in the relationship or in general.
Third , write about how the two of you negotiated and/or managed the 3 dialectical tensions [Connection-Autonomy, Openness-Privacy, and Predictability-Novelty]. Use examples. Were you successful? Why or why not? How did the managing of these three dialectical fit into and/or connect with the relationship’s trajectory on Knapp’s model? Can you recall any secret tests run in the relationship? If so, how did the test and its outcome affect the relationship?
Use the vocabulary and language of the model/chapter to justify your written analysis. Not all relationships travel through each stage of the model. Choose a relationship that you can track through most of them. Often, relationships move forward AND back. Track all the moves of your chosen relationship. Every relationship manages all three tensions.
