Investigating Fair Trade

For this assignment, you will investigate what Fair Trade products are found in your local grocery store, do some research on the companies, and discuss how these fair trade practices differ from conventional products.
First, go to a grocery or food store that you frequent (Smiths, Macys, Sprouts, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, WinCo, Harmons, etc), and look for a few fair trade products. You will often find fair trade products in chocolate, coffee, tea, cosmetics, or even wine if you go to a liquor store. You should find 3 different fair trade items, preferably from different companies.
In a 2 to 3 page document, complete the following
Document (or a picture!) the product and record as many details as you can, including the brand, product name, place of production, and any descriptions of trade practices.
When you are back home, research these companies and describe their stated impact on local communities with whom they work.
Examine the places or countries where these companies work and their level of development. You can use the Human Development Index (http://hdr.undp.org/en/countries
(Links to an external site.)
) to look at how they rank compared to other countries in the world. You could also look at the United Nations country pages (just Google “United Nations Ghana” or whatever your country is).
How might these countries and communities benefit from fair trade products vs. conventional products?
