I am taking a class called: Fantastic Archaeology. It is regarding hoaxes and myths in the field of anthropology. I am suppose to write a paper that debunks the mummy’s curse as a myth – and not as fact. To do this we would use a scientific hypothesis to explain the science is correct and the myth is “probably” false. The paper should focus more science than myth. Obviously, sensationalism in newspapers and superstition do not make the curse real! My professor mentioned getting into the practices of Egyptian burial and beliefs in order to suggest there is no such belief in curses by them, so we should not perpetuate them. He wants info on why perpetuating a myth hits the field of archaeology’s credibility and hurts the integrity of the field. It may be wise to suggest how ppl hold onto beliefs even after they are proven wrong. Please, talk about Howard Carter with positive credit to his contribution to archaeology. You may mention conspiracy, but again the sun is to prove the myth is not real. Carter was a respectable artist and archaeologist of his time. Also, I would like the mention of the photographic evidence by Harry Burton and how amazing that is. The time it took to categorize and document the evidence , and the care that it took to preserve that tomb. Someone else who could be mentioned who is the more current archaeologist, Dr. Zahi Hawass as he is very important to Egyptology. I’d like to speak to both Howard Carter’s and Zahi Hawass’s work and reputation. in the paper. Also suggest that everyone “dies” these coincidental odd or bad things after the “curse” were merely that – coincidence. More people lived long into old age after opening the tomb – including Howard Carter. He even mentioned it was all “tommy rot”. This is a senior level papare, so please be aware the paper needs to be to that level before you accept the job.
