Levels of habitat selection and scales

McGarigal et al. (2016) differentiate between levels of habitat
selection and scales at which habitat selection occurs. Further, they
make the statement: “…it is preferable to use multi-scaled approaches
coupled with empirical means to determine the characteristic scale…”
define the difference between levels of selection and scales of
selection and then explain what McGarigal et al. meant by their
suggestion that multi-scaled approaches are necessary to define the
characteristic scale.
