Misogyny in Greek Mythology

1. The assignment itself:
Students must write a paper approximately seven double spaced typed pages in length (using a 12 point font similar to Times or Times New Roman) and submit it in class on the due date. Due to a lack of secure and private instructor office space, essays may not be left for the instructor at their office, but must be submitted directly to the instructor in person. Cover pages, footnotes/endnotes, pictures and bibliography DO NOT count towards the seven page length requirement.
2. What is the aim of this paper?
The essay is intended to be a research paper. This means that students are expected to perform independent research and find sources of information on the topic of their choice (as opposed to repeating what is in the text book or what was said in class). Essays that simply repeat material from lectures or the text book will not receive a passing grade. Likewise, essays that simply re-narrate the plot of a work of literature will not receive a passing grade.
In addition to being a research paper, the essay should also be an exercise in critical and analytical thought. Students must display evidence that they are engaging the material and thinking about it.
As research is conducted, students should be able to begin formulating a research question/line of inquiry concerning the topic (something quite straightforward is fine) based on what questions arise for them during their research and what conclusions they think may be drawn in answer. This is the bulk of the essay – the student sets out the question or problem, and then works through it. Thus, ultimately, the paper aims to make a point (this is called the ‘thesis’). A university level paper must have a strongly stated central thesis. In the final draft, the thesis may be stated at the beginning of the paper, with argument and evidence to follow, capped off by a conclusion corroborating the thesis, or students may start by setting out the question, working though it, and stating their conclusions (thesis) at the end of the paper. Whether the thesis appears at the beginning or end of the paper is a matter of personal choice, just so long as
there is a thesis. Students should back up their thesis with both the evidence they’ve found through their research and with their own reasoning.
