The Assignment:
This assignment is a formal research paper. At least 10 sources, 5
scholarly and 5 non-scholarly, will be integrated to make your argument. This project
builds about the two preceding projects where you read and critically assessed your
sources in the annotated bibliography and explored questions that helped you suss out
position on your topic with the exploratory essay. Now you are ready to make an
argument, establish a thesis, and support the thesis with your sources. Requirements:
MLA/APA format; 12 pt. font; 1 inch margins; double spacing; full works cited page/
references page; 1850-2000 words; bracket word count. In addition to the textual content
of your essay, you will integrate 4 images and 4 hyperlinks (hyperlinks should be to
sources not CITED in the essay but to information that might provide clarification for your reader). Include the source you got your
images from in your references/works cited page (so, not google images…go to the website upon which the image lives).
The Purpose:
The purpose of the research project is to work on academic prose, practice in-text citation, synthesize/analyze sources,
and cultivate your academic voice in writing. By doing so you are cultivating your ability to establish and support a claim with your
thesis statement and integrate sourced material through quote, paraphrase, and summary. This project also works to teach you how to
enter into an academic conversation without simply reporting back the information you have consumed—hence the synthesis part. It is
important to consider that I-the-researcher is vastly different from I-who has the opinions; therefore, I is a completely appropriate
position to speak from in academic research, but you do have to watch out for accidental usage of opinion language. Additionally, you
are honing your ability to establish a position through a supportable and arguable thesis statement, which is useful for future writing
endeavors. Finally, the multimodal elements give you some creative freedom to integrate visual elements in your writing that
compliment and contribute to you argument while also learning how to use image functions in your word processer while the hyperlinks
help you engage in another way of source integrating (these hyperlinks might be to YouTube, blogs, websites, Wikipedia etc.).
Approach:
You will select a position (your thesis), and your paper will support this position. Sources will be integrated as necessary
and you will include yourself as a contributor to the conversation. First person is not required, but you are the researcher after all. Keep
the following things in mind:
·Quotes, summaries, paraphrases are conversations starters—they most likely do not end paragraphs or the discussion of your
points.
·Balance the ways in which you integrate your sources
·Include images if you want that contribute…not shock value

·Put yourself in conversation with your sources. You have valid things to add
·Be direct with your thesis because your entire paper supports it. It is a thesis statement…not thesis question…not these collection
of sentences…not thesis paragraph. Singular (although complexity is potential) statement.
·A thesis statement is not a list of moves (that is a forecasting statement).
·Topic sentences do three things 1) establish the paragraph 2) connect to the thesis 3) transition from previous paragraph
·Do not use opinion language like I think…I believe…I feel…In my opinion…
·The formality of this paper relies upon the conventions of your chosen citation method. Use the Purdue OWL or a handbook to
help you be sure. Remember you need to only use one citation method instead of accidentally merging two.
·As you learned in Project 2, summary and paraphrased material is also parenthetically cited.
·Cite your sources, introduce your quotes, and format your works cited page/references page in ALL drafts; this gives me and your
peer reviewers the chance to help you remedy missteps.
Assessment:
10 points for each draft; 150 points for final draft
1)Content: The essay will be graded based on a clear argument that is established with a thesis statement and then mapped
through the supporting paragraphs with each topic sentence. Additionally, a successful research paper also integrates all of the
sources (at least 8) used in multiple ways. The essay is driven by the thesis and the sources are networked together to support
each topic sentence.
2)Organization:
The essay follows a logical approach that effectively navigates from thesis to topic sentences and seamlessly
transitions between supporting points and materials
3)Source Integration/Format:
The essay clearly adheres to the composer’s chosen citation method. All sources are integrated
through a balanced approach of direct quote, summary, and paraphrase in order to create a well-rounded argument. Ideally all
sources are also integrated more than once similarly to your Exploratory Essay. In addition to the sources integrated properly,
correct format matters. The works cited page/references page is correctly organized and formatted within each entry and the
parenthetical in-text citations are correctly situated.
4)Editing/Polishing
: The research paper will be relatively free of mechanical, formatting, typographical issues. This means that
you do a final read and clean up any GUMP issues (Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, Punctuation)

1) Religion is the largest source of direct and indirect harm against the LGBTQ+ community.
2) LGBTQ+ members are neglected of human rights due to homophobia.
Topic Sentences
1) Religious conversion therapies are a large cause higher suicide rates in the LGBTQ+ community.
2) The rights of this community that are often neglected are the right to marriage, the right to adopt, have certain services done that people who are not in this community can have.
3) Certain countries and states have laws that allow people to discriminate against this community freely due to homophobia.
4) The majority of religious texts are homophobic or justify homophobia.
5) Many members of this community are abandoned due to religious views.
6) Religious leaders have been the cause of multiple executions in this community in other countries.
