The intention of this essay is to give you an opportunity to showcase the writing skills that you are bringing into this course. Also, this is an opportunity to jumpstart your thinking around our course theme, which is living in Chicago.
For this essay, compose a 500-word essay (minimum word count) examining your neighborhood’s identity. Now, what does identity mean? Identity includes memories, experiences, relationships, and values. These can be things you consider positive and not so positive. All of these things go into creating and making up an identity.
In the text, The South Side, the author, Nicole Y. Moore, examines the identity of her neighborhood, Chatham. She also uses her neighborhood’s identity and her personal experience growing up on the south-side of Chicago to examine the larger experience of living in Chicago. That is what we will be doing in stages throughout this course. This essay is step one in that process.
