TOPIC: “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a fictional account of Gilman’s own mental and emotional collapse, and it gives us some insight into the practices of psychology in the late nineteenth century. Research attitudes toward depression in the late 1800s. How did doctors treat women’s mental health in the 1800s. How would postpartum depression be treated today? Finally, explain when is the ‘point of no return’ for the protagonist.
Note: Students may want to review Chapter 3 “Approaching Assignments in Literature.” Pay particular attention to the sample student sample essay on “Writing a Comparison-Contrast Essay,” “Writing an Explication,” and “Writing a Character Analysis.”
