Once you have read article
B. Perry and R. Scrivens, “Epilogue: The Trump Effect on Right-Wing Extremism in Canada” in Right-Wing Extremism in Canada, Pagrave Macmillan, 2019, pages 143-172 with intention and have physically recorded your answers to the questions outlined above, you are now ready to write your Reading Reflection. As you write your RR on each article, I want you to briefly summarize (one paragraph) the author(s)’ main thesis, then identify a question, a quotation, and two talking points. These last three elements collectively constitute what is referred to as the Q-Tip method originally developed by Patricia Connor-Greene.
1. Question: As you go through an article using an active reading approach, you will formulate a variety of questions. Pick one that you think will encourage your classmates to reflect on the content and/or implications of the article. Remember, these questions are designed to make your audience think and grapple with the content of the reading. So, do not select a closed-ended question that your classmates can answer with either a simple factual response or an unthinking “yes or no.”
2. Quotation: As you read the article, keep your eyes open for one quotation (2-5 sentences) that piques your interest, is provocative or controversial, or otherwise invites the reader to contemplate the issue more deeply. In addition to writing down your chosen quotation, I also want you to discuss in a few sentences why you chose this quotation. Why does it speak to you?
3. Talking Points: Once you have finished reading the article, consider your reaction to it. You should already know what the main argument is, but what is your reaction to it? Construct two talking points that lay out your thoughts or reactions:
• Do you agree or disagree with the author(s)’ main argument?
• Why or why not?
• In what ways does this argument extend, contribute to or problematize our understandings of the issue?
• How does this argument and/or article relate to other aspects of the course or other concepts we have been investigating?
