You will write a 6-8 page, 5+ source research based argumentative essay that accomplishes one of the two objectives below:
Identifies a finds a product or service with multiple main claims and come to a conclusion on whether it really does deliver on its promises and is worth it.
Identifies a topic of conventional wisdom, a common place belief or something like a myth, legend, lore that is generally believed (possibly beyond all logic) and decides whether it is real or not.
The essay should be an examination, using a mix of scholarly and popular (expert based) research, of the main claims of your topic. Your essay should ultimately show whether your research supports or refutes the claims made by your topic.
Your decision should be based on scientific/expert consensus. You should not be making decisions based on pure belief, unverified accounts or studies that are not replicated or representative of consensus. For example, that one study/article you read about aliens causing global warming, should not be one of your resources.
Essentially, you will be arguing, using outside sources (no personal experience, anecdotal evidence or customer reviews) whether your audience should use a product, service etc. or not—or—whether your audience should accept or ignore common belief or a myth etc.
Your thesis should answer this question: Does the scientific research or expert opinions support the main claims of your topic?
Your essay should follow the paragraph-by-paragraph guidelines provided below. How well you accomplish the tasks below will determine your grade.
