Modernization theory is controversial, and scholars from a variety of disciplines and with a variety of approaches have sought to discredit it. In this essay, you will compare and contrast THESE three critiques of modernization theory. Which of the three most effectively discredits the theory and why in your view? What makes its argument most compelling? What makes the other critiques less compelling? As you write your essay, you should also reference Lipset. In other words, don’t just say that you thought the Bellin piece, for example, was the most compelling critique because you liked it; SHOW US how its arguments most effectively debunk the theory as described by Lipset and in class (with evidence). There is no right or wrong answer, but you must defend your argument. Please note, however, that I don’t expect you to do additional research or reading beyond class materials, our discussions, and the lectures.
You MUST properly cite all references consulted and please include a bibliography or works cited section at the end of your essay. You may choose any citation style as long as you are consistent. Scholastic dishonesty and plagiarism will be taken very seriously.

Has a clear, specific, and compelling argument about which critique is the most persuasive, and the argument is stated in the first paragraph of the essay.
II. Evidence – 35%
Uses and properly cites examples from the three critiques, Lipset, and class lectures.
III. Effectiveness and Relevance of Evidence – 25%
The examples cited from the critiques, Lipset, and class lectures, effectively and compellingly help support the essay’s main points.
IV. Organization, Clarity, and Grammar – 15%
The argument and evidence supporting it are well-organized, and overall the essay is clearly written and without spelling and/or grammatical errors that detract from the argument.
