An annotated bibliography is an excellent way to organize and understand your research. For this essay, you will create an annotated bibliography for the fours sources you will use in your essay.

Annotated Bibliography
Baldwin, Lewis V.. “Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.: What They Thought About Each Other”. Islamic Studies 25.4 (1986): 395–416. After reading this article I came up with the true focus of my paper. Here I learned about the constant back and forth through time violence and nonviolence play in the terms of rights and how to make change in the world. There has been and probably always will be a balance between the two. In this article Baldwin shows how these two men felt about each other and treated each other with great examples of their brief interaction, writings, talk about each other, and more. X seems to have been left out and avoided by King and both men seem to have negative comments about each other’s views and actions, but it is obvious that both men respected each other and the conclusion can be drawn that both of them were more similar to the other than they knew. There are great quotes in here that add to pieces that X left out of his autobiography and much more I can use.
Colaiaco, James A.. “Martin Luther King, Jr. And the Paradox of Nonviolent Direct Action”. Phylon (1960-) 47.1 (1986): 16–28. This is a key article for me. This breaks down King’s careful planning and systematic campaign in order to achieve two great successes; the civil rights act and the Selma voting act. The key to his successes is that he used non-violence to attract violence from racist regimes, got coverage for it, and then the government had to intervene. Basically nonviolence and violence go together to create change- all through time. This is my main argument. King and X seem to be two extremely different people who had little to nothing to do with one another but both needed each other because all the events in the 1960’s that led to change had violence and nonviolence act together.
Condit, Celeste Michelle, and John Louis Lucaites. “Malcolm X and the Limits of the Rhetoric of Revolutionary Dissent”. Journal of Black Studies 23.3 (1993): 291–313. This article was written in 1993 and starts with a comparison to what Malcolm X would say in light of the Rodney King case that was current of the time. What I really like about this article is that it takes a unique stance on what X had to say on violence in terms of rhetoric and action; X speaks violence to provoke his people and to give self-confidence- he actually did not want to participate in any violence- only to threaten it and give America an image of violence. I think I can use this article to my advantage because Martin Luther King spoke non-violence but actually wanted and expected violence to get the results he wanted. The irony and dualism between these two only supports my thesis.
So an annotated bibliography is a formatted document where you list your source citation, summarize your findings, discuss how you can use the sources, and any other information that would be helpful about your sources. Get in the habit of creating one of these WHILE you research and not after you research. This way you are evaluating while you research so the work is valuable to you and not a chore.
