Topic start: Substance Abuse Related to Juvenile Delinquency
Having a teenage daughter many fears run through my mind as I think of the situations, she will be in having to make decisions that could affect her future. For myself I grew up in a strict household, where my only chance of freedom was to sneak out, I was ill prepared for the pressures of freedom. I frequently made poor decisions that luckily had no lasting repercussions. Fortunately, my exposure was limited to alcohol and nicotine. As a teenager grasping my only freedom by sneaking out in the late hours returning before anyone noticed I was missing; I would have tried probably anything my peers were engaging in.
In my adult years, I have had acquaintances that were not so fortunate. In their direct family they have heavy substance abusers and grew up surrounded by role models of poor decisions. With testimonies that not participating in using meth or crack or other cheap extremely addictive harmful substances was grounds for alienation. Others reported that they were introduced to drugs at an early age and becoming addicted at such a young age it was hard to make decisions outside of chasing the euphoric high.
I would like to research the relation of early substance abuse and the relation to juvenile delinquency. Knowing the effects drugs have on development, what causes a person to initially take the substance. There have been many programs set to deter youth from partaking that seem to mis the mark. What could be done to make a successful program? Substance use on a developing brain can have dire consequences, then with the lack of life experience they are more likely to partake in risky behavior that could permanently alter their future. These decisions include failing out of school, permanently disqualifying them from potential jobs, driving while under the influence, a permanent battle dealing with addiction, and many more issues associated with substance use.
