Take a position on a contemporary topic. To take a side on a subject, you should first establish the arguability of a topic that interests you. Ask yourself the following questions to ensure that you will be able to present a strong argument: Is it a real issue, with genuine controversy and uncertainty? Can you identify at least two distinctive positions? Are you personally interested in advocating one of these positions? Is the scope of the issue narrow enough to be manageable?

Write a position paper that demonstrates your opinion on a contemporary topic is valid and defensible. Adopt appropriate voice, tone, and level of formality with writing. Use writing and reading for inquiry, learning, thinking, and communicating. Integrate your own ideas with those of others. Understand the relationship among language, knowledge, and power. Apply information literacy skills to seek research. Expand and show multiple perspectives on an issue or concern. Understand and apply MLA style accurately.
