Hi! I am a senior at the University of Richmond taking a 450-level Ethics class. For my final paper, we are required to take on a topic of interest and argue something that someone intelligent in ethics could disagree with. So I am arguing that what bothers me about contemporary hollywood is its extreme political left-leaning ideology and engaging in moral grandstanding with this ideology both with films directly on screen and hollywood culture (media). “moral grandstanding”: “the use and abuse of moral talk to seek status, to promote oneself, or to boost your own brand.” Hollywood often engages in moral grandstanding and this is morally problematic. This is my argument against political grandstanding in Hollywood both on the grounds that it marginalizes opposing viewpoints and also that it engages in objectionable forms of moral grandstanding. I know that there is a longstanding debate about the relationship between politics and art, and this debate can help inform your essay.
