The Family and Delinquency

The family is a major agent of socialization in the U.S. It is the responsibility of parents to socialize their children properly, teaching them what types of behavior are appropriate or inappropriate. The family should act as an agent of pro-socialization, thereby preventing delinquency. However, the breakdown of the family and the failure to socialize children appropriately can promote delinquent behavior. The book outlines several ways in which the family influences delinquent behavior (i.e., family breakup, family conflict, family effectiveness, and family deviance).
