Brief description of Critical Essay (given by professor):
Critical essay writing is a two-step process. The first step in this kind of an essay is Analysis, where you will analyze the readings by asking critical questions (some critical questions/ probes are listed for your help below). When analyzing I want you to think in terms of ‘What? So What? Now what?’ Start with describing theme/ the issue/ research question, observations, and reactions. This will help you make initial observations about what you feel and think. Use free writing to jot down points that can be formalized later and be made a part of your essay (for example, what does the author say, is it different from what you believed or read in another paper; how so? do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? Etc.) The second step in a critical analysis essay is Articulation. For this you will use your analysis to develop a clear argument and develop a thesis statement, make an outline, write, and revise.
The suggested structure of the critical essay can be as follows:
• Introduction with a hook and Thesis Statement (Develop a clear argument by pulling together different themes from your analysis into a main idea)
• First Body Paragraph with a general description of your subject (What, so what, now what?).
• Second Body Paragraph with your thoughts, and the reflective effect that the writing had on you.
• Third Body Paragraph with the lessons you have learned
Conclusion with a summary.
