The University of Miami

The University of Miami’s official mascot is the ibis. Folklore maintains that the native marsh bird is the last to take shelter before a hurricane hits and the first to emerge once the storm passes, making it an apt symbol of courage and resilience.

Considering your ability to control your own motivation and behavior, how have past experiences helped build your courage and resilience to persist in the face of academic and life challenges so that, once these storms pass, you can emerge in continued pursuit of your goals?*

The main thing that builds my courage to pursue my life goals is communities. I’ve lived in different areas in the East Side of the United States, and in each area you see how different communities live. Wanting better for the communities around me, and that I’m in drives me most as a creative individual. For me, as a black child, I rarely saw media that represented my community, and if so authentically and in a positive light. As I have aged, there have been more and more movies representing the black community and my goal is to continue that push in representation, not only for the black community but for all communities. Many communities rarely have their time to shine in the spotlight. Representation is very important to me as getting to know communities unites us as a nation and as people. Wanting a day to hear that a community finally feels seen by entertainment media will be my dream come true, and until that day comes I’ll continue to create and be in works that give the spotlight to all communities as they’re all beautiful in their own way. Helping people in some way is my main goal in life and what’s better than to possibly save a person’s life through the work I do.
