How do the small acts of violence in the first half of the book (bullying, the bird) relate to the big act of violence at the end of the book?
The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963 is a serious novel at its core, yet Curtis includes a number of humorous episodes. Find one example of humor and explain what it means and how it works in the story. What effect does it have on the story? Does it improve the story or detract from it? Why do you think Curtis included this humorous situation or element?
Why do you think the author Christopher Paul Curtis included a real life historical event (the bombing of the 16th Street Birmingham Baptist Church in 1963) in a work of fiction? Do you think the author should have spent more time on the church bombing and its aftereffects? Why?
