1.Introduction: Create a cover page and
executive summary. Include a summary of what the case is about and include your
overall solutions to the problems you found.
2.Issues and Assumptions: Identify one or
more key issues in the situation described in the case and/or your underlying
assumptions. Every situation has a number of issues and your task in this
section is to identify the major issues that you will focus your analysis on
PLUS any assumptions you feel it is important to highlight.
a.What are the top 8-10 business issues?
b.What are the top 5-7 HR issues that
affect the business issues?
3.Analysis: What are the causes/factors
producing the situation described in the case? Identify the fundamental issues
and causal factors of the issues you found in #2 above. Also, are its likely
effects a major problem, or so minor that they should be ignored? You will
probably need to devote most of your efforts to this section, as this is the
most difficult part of the assignment for most students because it involves
theorizing about why things have happened, rather than just describing what did
occur. Although difficult, this is essential because if you can figure out WHY
the situation arose, then you can begin to pinpoint what aspects of the
situation are going to be responsive to management action. (This may be why
Kurt Lewin said, “There is nothing so practical as a good theory.”) Analyze a
and b in #2 above.
4.Solution and management Action: What course of action would you adopt if you
were involved in this situation? How would you implement your suggested
actions? In this section it is essential for you to be concrete (e.g., if you
think that employees should cooperate more, rather than saying “they should
cooperate more”, tell me what should be done specifically to get them to
cooperate. Further, every idea has its good and bad points—be sure to include a
statement for each of your recommended actions about the potential for your
recommendation to be ineffective or effective or to backfire. In the section
you draw conclusions and make recommendations. What are some alternative
courses of action? Select the alternatives you would recommend and
explain/justify your choices. Include specifics about the implementation of
your recommendation: who should do what, when, and how for each area. Justify
your decisions with expert opinions and/or with professional experience
evidence. You should focus on the mission critical issues. What are the top 3
business issues and what can HR do to help those solutions be successful? Draw
conclusions and make recommendations.
