What are the demographics of this population in your area?

Select a vulnerable population in your community. To do this, conduct a windshield survey in your community. A windshield survey is completed by observing a population by looking out of a window of your car (or a bus, or riding your bike) to identify a vulnerable population in your community. Conduct research on your chosen population via the Internet and by calling or visiting your local health department. Develop a PowerPoint presentation to communicate your observations and research. An example listing of vulnerable populations has been included for your consideration.

Poor and homeless persons
Pregnant adolescents
Migrant workers and immigrants
Severely mentally ill individuals
Substance abusers
Abused individuals and victims of violence
Persons with communicable disease
People at risk of disease transmission
Persons who are HIV positive
Persons with Hepatitis B virus
Other suggestions:
Elderly
Children
Women with high risk pregnancies
Women with access to prenatal care

Prepare a power point presentation that identifies each of the following
Should have a title slide, at least one slide per category below, and a reference slide with all sources in APA format
I. Population Description
How many members of this vulnerable population are in your town/city or state? (Use state information if city statistics are not available)
What are the demographics of this population in your area? Age ranges, ethnicities, employment status, etc.
II. Health Risks
What are the main health risks this population faces? Example: Substance abusers are at risk for liver failure, HIV, hepatitis B/C, overdose death, suicide, depression, etc.
What are the health needs of this population? Example: Substance abusers need access to detoxification centers, rehabilitation, mental health services such as counseling, HIV screening, treatment for HIV or Hep B/C, etc.
III. Resources
What resources, services, or programs are available in your area to address this population’s health risks and health needs. Include at least one resource that is geared toward primary prevention. Label each resource as “primary”, “secondary”, or “tertiary”. Example: Primary prevention for substance abuse includes D.A.R.E programs in schools.
IV. Service Gaps/Interventions
Describe one resource that is not currently available in your area but would be valuable in improving outcomes for your chosen population. Discuss the impact you think this resource could have, including at least one reference that supports this impact. Example: Mississippi does not have mental health services for homeless individuals dealing with substance abuse. Substance abusers frequently struggle with co-existing mental illness and when they cannot receive adequate counseling and support, they find it very difficult to engage in the recovery process.
