Part 1
Britomart overcomes a series of allegorical obstacles and events in the House of Busyrane episode (Cantos 11 and 12 of Book 3). What are the key obstacles and events, and how do you interpret them allegorically? (“Allegorical” here basically means “symbolic.”) Why is Britomart able to free Amoret? What does she do and not do? What is it about her character that suits her to the task (Scudamore, for example, can’t free Amoret, but Britomart can)? What does it mean that Busyrane the magician is also a kind of writer/poet? Etc. etc.
Part 2
Compare the two endings of Book 3. Identify the main differences between the two endings, and discuss which are significant, and why. Pay special attention to Britomart’s reactions and to comparisons (similes, metaphors) that Spenser uses.
