Read the article “The Nuer: Cattle and Kinship in Sudan” (on Canvas) and answer the
following questions in a 2 page minimum paper (plus works cited):
1) Write a short summary (about 2 paragraphs) of Nuer culture as presented in the
article answering the following questions: What is the traditional homeland of the
Nuer? What is the Nuer’s subsistence strategy and how does this affect their
settlement pattern? How does kinship work in Nuer society (how are people
related?)
2) Based on the definitions in your textbook, are the Nuer a tribe or a chiefdom?
Why? What are the characteristics of Nuer culture that fit this definition?
3) Why do you think warfare is important in Nuer culture?
