Instruction: Your paper will be graded in terms of (a) importance of the topic of your choice, (b) coherence, (c) breadth and depth of the work, (d) the amount of work you invested, and (e) quality of writing. The length of the paper (main text) should be no more than 10 pages, double-spaced. Remember that what matters is NOT the quantity, but the quality of your paper. Take the following instruction:
1) Select a research question: It is very important to select a good research question as it will determine the direction in which your paper goes. Take some time to choose a right question that is important, interesting, novel, and specific. For example, you can select a research question such as “when is polygraph evidence admissible?” “What is legal realism and how did it affect social science research in law?” “What is innocent project and why is it important?” or “What is the psychological mechanism underlying weapon focus in eyewitness testimony?” Selecting a wrong question (e.g., unimportant, too broad, having no scholarly merit, etc.) is likely to lead to a low grade.
2) Make a search for materials: In order to answer your question, make a literature search using PsycINFO or PsycArticles data bases available on the Baruch library website. You can also make use of other database to get information about the topic you selected. It is recommended that each student use and cite at least 5 journal articles (academic journal articles) in the paper. If you cite a specific legal case, it would be great. If so, provide some reference information about the case so that the instructor can locate the case, as needed.
3) Organize your paper: Each paper should be organized by several sections including introduction, main body, and conclusion. The contents should be organized in a coherent manner so that all the sections are well connected to each other. Your argument(s) should be supported by other studies or case information. Make sure to have a reference section at the end of the paper, which is not counted as the main text. Attach an appendix, if needed.
Other instructions about the format of the paper
Students are expected to follow the instructions below in writing up the manuscript:
a) Students should create a cover page that includes an appropriate title of the paper and name of the member(s)
b) It is recommended that you structure your paper such that each section or sub-section has headings.
c) Students should have a references section at the end (which is not counted as part of the 10 pages) for whatever citation you mentioned in the paper.
d) Too many grammatical or typographic errors will have some impact on the grade.
