What is the “the myth of the white conquistador”, and why, according to Matthew Restall, is it important to
question it? What alternative explanations, and sources does he provide for a more accurate understanding of
the “Spanish Conquest”? Use Restall’s chapter “The Myth of the White Conquistador” (in The Seven Myths of
the Spanish Conquest), and Mathew Restall and Florine Asselsbergs’s presentations of the primary sources in
Invading Guatemala as your main secondary sources. Illustrate your analysis with
three primary sources from both Mesoamerica and the Andes, as follows: For Mesoamerica use the Nahuas’
and Mayas’ letters in the book Invading Guatemala, and for the Andes use excerpts from Guamán
Poma de Ayala’s New Chronicle and Good Government. If pertinent, use Penguin History, the full
books of the above-mentioned authors (which you can get through the Library, or interlibrary loan), and
lectures notes, as appropriate. Always make sure to cite your sources. The prompt must be responded to using
the sources as described. Your paper should be typed, double-spaced, and 1,000 words in length discounting footnotes, references,
name, date, and title.
