What type of people behave with extraversion and openness online/on social media?

The Big Five personality scale or the Five Factor Model of personality is one of the most popular and pervasive ways of categorizing personality used by psychologists today. The “Five Factors” are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Psychologists often look for variables that are associated with the development of certain personality traits and other variables that seem to be outcomes of such traits.
For example, researchers have found that birth order is related to certain aspects of the Five Factors, and others have found that GPA and SAT scores are also related to personality factors. Your task in this paper is to consider the Big Five personality traits, develop testable hypotheses about other variables that might relate to personality, and describe how you would test those hypotheses. In other words, you will be writing the first half of an APA style paper.
Paper 1 should be 5 pages long (minimum). The introduction should be 3-4 pages, and the method section should be approximately 1-2 pages. You will also have a title page and references (which do not count toward the page length requirement).
Current Research Questions:
Your primary task is to form predictions about how some or all of the Big Five personality traits might relate to other variables. You will do a literature search for the background information necessary to form these hypotheses, and your professor will also assist you with this task.
Remember, you as a researcher cannot feasibly manipulate personality. Participants’ personalities are a type of “subject variable:” Factors that are already a part of the individual when they come in to be tested by you. So, you will not be able to determine cause or effect in the research you do in this class. You will only be able to say that personality is (or is not) related to other variables in your data.
Introduction:
Give an overview of the research topic.
• – Start with a broad definition of personality and how it relates to your research question.
• – Define the classic BFI, citing the original study.
• – Present a review of more recent papers, preferably related to your research question.
• – End your introduction by describing the goal of the current study. YOUR STUDY GOALS
SHOULD RELATE TO EACH OF THE PAPERS YOU REVIEWED IN YOUR INTRODUCTION. Your main job in the introduction is to relate the past research to the current research (meaning, YOUR research in this class). Clearly state how it all relates!
• – Describe your overall hypotheses and specific predictions that will be examined in your research. Hypotheses are general ideas about how your research will turn out. For example, you might hypothesize that positive personality traits will be associated with excellent academic performance. Specific predictions are just that: You explain exactly what statistical results you predict you will find in your research. For example, you might specifically predict that Conscientiousness as measured by the total Conscientiousness score on the short form BFI will be positively correlated with self-reported overall high school GPA.
• – I do not have a specific requirement for the number of predictions you must make. But, if you have too few, you will have a very hard time meeting the page requirement for this paper. So, please be reasonable in the number of predictions you make.
Method:
Your method section can be divided into three subsections: Participants, Design, and Procedure. Though this format is not required, it is useful for most students to follow this format. Our participants included students in PSYC 230 at California State University San Marcos.
– All participants voluntarily agreed to assist with this research for no compensation.
– Refer to the data file (which will be posted on CougarCourses) for exact sample size, as well as information about participants’ gender, age, and ethnicity/race. You will report descriptive statistics here (such as the total number of females and males in the sample, the average age, etc.)
The design of your study refers to the type of study you have conducted.
– Was it a quasi-experimental design?
– Was it a purely correlational design?
– Were there separate groups of participants that did different tasks (a between-subjects design), or did everyone do the same task (a within-subjects design)?
– This section is a sort of “preview” of how data will be analyzed (i.e. how participants are grouped tells us how data will be grouped, and therefore how it can be analyzed).
– This section may change significantly between Paper 1 and Paper 2 as you learn more about study design. That’s totally fine.
In the procedure section, explain the task that participants completed (both for taking the BFI and whatever your group has people do).
• – You will need to briefly describe the BFI short-form and cite its creators in this section. This does not count as one of your 5 references.
• – What were the instructions to the participants?
• – What did the participants do?
• – How were responses recorded?
• – Explain what variables were measured. For example, did you ask about high school GPA? If you
developed your own measure for this study, you will have to describe it in detail (and include it in the appendices in Paper 2). If you used some one else’s measure, you will have to give a general overview of what it consists of, and use an appropriate citation.
References:
You will cite at least five journal articles in APA style, both within the text and on the reference page at the end of your paper. Two journal articles have already been posted to CougarCourses for your
reference. You will do a literature search for at least three more. You will also cite the creators of the BFI short form.
Please remember that APA style is required throughout this paper, and that you are expected to use all resources at your disposal to ensure that this is the case. You are also expected to carefully review the materials presented in this course to determine the content of your paper. The information you need has been provided to you. Your job is to use it appropriately.
You must submit this paper in electronic format on the day it is due. Failure to follow these requirements will result in a grade deduction as specified in the syllabus.
