Witness Reading Response

1. According to Kiefer et al, “[f]ine poetry is this distillation of of experience that captures the essence of an object, a feeling, or a thought. Such intensification requires a more highly structured patterning of words than prose does” (167).
Karen Hesse uses free verse to write her novel, Witness. Go into the novel and find four examples of her poetry that illustrate capturing an essence in a concentrated form. Be sure to use proper in-text citations from Hesse’s book and explain how the quotation you’ve chosen illustrates the Kiefer et al quotation above. (Length – 1 full page)
2. Characters are an important element in any novel. Choose two of your favorite characters from this novel and discuss why they are your favorite characters. Be sure to use quotations from Hesse’s book to support your claims. (Length – 1/2 page)
3. The setting of a novel is also a key element in fiction. Analyze how the setting (time and place) of this novel factors into the theme of the novel. (Length – 1/2 page)
