Assignment Question
Write a film analysis paper about the film In the Mood for Love.
For this assignment, you will submit an original and engaging essay that addresses one or two films in the course’s filmography. These films must have been screened in class or in discussion sections, and at least one of them must be a feature film. If you are only writing about one film, it must not be the same one you wrote about for your scene analysis paper.
In your paper, you must address one element from Column A and one or two elements from Column B: Column A (choose 1) Column B (choose 1 or 2) Style Mise-en-scène Narrative Cinematography Genre Editing Documentary Sound Experimental You should develop your own argument drawing from the course readings, screenings, and lectures. This argument should be supported by close readings and analysis of specific scenes of the film(s) under consideration. It will be wise to address these two requirements in your argument and develop them at length in your analysis. Your essay must have a clear thesis statement in the introduction and use an appropriate citation style (we recommend MLA, Chicago, or Turabian). Refrain from making judgments of value. We don’t need to know whether you like the film, the director, the performer, or the scene. Make an argument you can sustain throughout the paper and stick to it. You should cite (and engage with) at least one academic source that is not your textbook (and not Wikipedia). Summary of Requirements Title Introduction paragraph with your thesis statement Focus on one element from Column A and one or two elements from Column B Use one external academic source Concluding paragraph Full citation references (may be a Works Cited page, or footnotes, or Bibliography, depending on the citation style of your choosing; just be consistent and thorough).
