This assignment asks you to consider how history and commemoration can be contentious issues in society today (even though the podcast is several years old, it’s still relatively recent). You are going to listen to a podcast, which you can access when you begin the assignment, and then you’ll be asked to discuss how two competing sides to the story use history to support their argument for removing or keeping the statue under consideration. As you do this, brainstorm other instances in which Write a paper on what Americans have used history for or against commemoration.
To have successful short answer responses, students must include the following:
Use historical evidence (at least two examples) to support their response to the question
Show change over time.
Think of how the question under consideration was influence by events that occurred before it and include that in your response.
Write in complete sentences; follow the response length listed in the individual question
Answer at least half of the questions posed in the prompt
I pose a series of questions to help you generate ideas, but in the age of quantification in education you should make an effort to answer at least half of them as long as you’re responding to the larger question/theme
