Long Assignment 2: Illuminating an Off-Syllabus Conversation
Find two off-syllabus sources that each address the same precise, complex question (one that reasonable people can disagree about, and where the terms of the question can be clearly stated), but that argue for different answers to the question.
Write a precise, illuminating, robust argument on this same topic, and to show that your argument is more plausible than both the existing arguments (think of them together as the ‘A1’ part of the thesis structure).
Show how you improve on both their weaknesses and build on both their strengths. Show how your own argument is stronger than the best parts of both combined. Be explicit about why your argument is illuminating for someone familiar with both other sources, and be explicit about why your reasons outweigh the reasons given for both.
Everything else about how you go about your illumination and demonstration of robustness – structure, choice of evidence, extent of bringing in further sources – is totally up to you: think about all the criteria of competent argument we’ve discussed this semester, and make your choices accordingly.
Your paper should be around 1500 words long. It will be worth 20% of your final grade.
Remember that all papers for this course ought to be written with an ideally diligent but shallow member of our class in mind (someone who has read all our readings and heard all our discussions, but not thought beyond them).
