Write an annotated bibliography about an ancient (pre-industrial) city established in either the Near East (Mesopotamia, Nile Valley, or Indus Valley) or Mesoamerica (Aztec, Maya, or Inca). There
should be 10 sources followed by a summary of each source. Do not make this into an archeological
assignment by focusing on individual buildings and monuments within the selected city.
Assignments should be double-spaced, 7-10 pages in length, and written in formal academic style. They
must include a title page, appropriate headings, and a bibliography. Supporting materials can either be
placed within the body of the assignment or as appendices. Use a proper and consistent format for
citations (parenthetical references, footnotes, or endnotes) and bibliographic entries. Assignment
writing tips are provided in Appendix A while assignment grading schemes (rubrics) and title page
format are provided in Appendix B.
For each book and/or journal article, an annotated bibliography should include a properly formatted
bibliographic entry at the top of the page followed by a few paragraphs that accurately summarize the
contents of the book/article (without subjective comments) in terms of: (1) its topic along with spatial and temporal scope (as related to GG271OC – especially topics related to
urban origin, development, and morphology); (2) its main purpose, findings, and conclusions; (3) its structure (i.e. whether the contents are arranged in a chronological geographical, topical, or
some other format or combination thereof); (4) its source(s) of evidence (i.e. whether the author uses primary and/or secondary resources); and (5) its contribution (i.e. whether the contents make an original and/or significant contribution to our
knowledge and understanding). A recognized bibliographic format should be consistently used for each entry. An annotated
bibliography should be written like an expanded abstract that often precedes a journal article. The following grading scheme will be used for the annotated bibliographies: (1) its topic along with spatial and temporal scope (as related to GG271OC – especially topics related to
urban origin, development, and morphology); (2) title page with topic/area specified; (3) brief introduction and clear purpose statement; (4) properly formatted bibliographic entry (for each source); (5) variety of selected sources in terms of themes/topics, perspectives/interpretations, time periods; (6) academic/scholarly sources (focus on books and journal articles); (7) identification and discussion of key topics/themes (for each source); (8) each summary (annotation) includes/emphasizes unique points and special information (to avoid
repetition) about urban origin(s), urban development, and urban morphology (note: emphasis
should be on the contents and the conclusions of each item, not on evaluating or critiquing the
contents); (9) 10 items/sources are examined; (10) brief summary/conclusion.
