Write an essay on the
value of theology that is mostly based on Smiths (2013) Introduction to
Theology article, but you must also interact with Smiths (2015) Sceptics on
the Value of Theology and Segals (2015) You Cannot Serve Both God and Theology.
In your summary, include Scripture that you source yourself on each point. Use
the following outline.
Introduction (100 words)

theology (750 words)
o The
nature of theology
o The
goal and task of theology
o The
methods of theology
2.

popular perceptions (250 words)
3.
Personal implications of
Smiths vision (200 words)

vision for my church (200 words)

Section
1
This should be a summary
of Smiths vision of theology, mostly in your own words, and your Scriptural
reflection on Smiths ideas. Section 2 should answer the
question, How does Smiths vision of theology compare or contrast with popular
perceptions of theology? Section 3 should answer the
question, If you were to become skilled at doing theology the way Smith
describes it, how do you think it would affect your life and ministry? Section
4 should answer the question, If your church leadership were to
become skilled at doing theology this way, how do you think it would affect the
church?

Important
notes and guidance for Assignment 1:
Please reference
correctly as you learned in module 2s Interactive Lessons.
Please demonstrate a good
understanding of the Reading materials and include Scripture in every essay you
write at SATS. In writing an assignment, you must write content that convinces
your marker of two things:
1.
1.
That you have an
in-depth and nuanced understanding of the topic. Practically, that means that
you must write such that you have demonstrated a good understanding of the
Reading materials pertaining to this assignment.
2.
That you have thought
about the Reading material in light of your independent thought and Scripture
research.
You should always
reference from all SATS sources pertaining to the topic. This module has three
required articles. You are expected to reference from all three.
For future assignments, you are encouraged to do extra research above and
beyond your interaction with SATS sources, but please dont do so at the
expense of SATS sources. For this assignment, we encourage you to rather focus
on getting both the content and technicalities right than to spend too much
time doing extra research.
For now, and for future
reference, word counts are tallied from the introduction to the conclusion,
that is, they do not include your cover page, table of contents or list of
works cited. You may always write 10% over or under the word count. This essay
is 1600 words, so you may write anything between 1440 and 1760 words.
Make sure you cover all
the content adequately. Its a common mistake for students to write a lot about
the nature of theology and about the goals and tasks of theology, but to
then relegate only a couple of sentences to the methods of theology. This
section is a bit more difficult to understand than the others, but so rich when
it comes to application. For your own understanding and development,
and since this is in the exam, we encourage you to consider how each of the
four methods apply in a ministry context when you read this. Of
course, if there are words you dont understand, look them up in a dictionary.
The materials for section
1.2 are quite long. You will not be able to discuss every task of theology
in-depth in the word count. What you can do is to pick the three tasks that
stand out to you the most and discuss them.
