POLICY AGENDAS

There are challenges associated with agenda building. If not dealt with carefully and skillfully, the challenges can adversely affect an issue or a proposal you are trying to place in front of a decision maker. On the other hand, no matter how expertly you build an agenda for your issue or proposal, some issues are going to simply be avoided or not selected for consideration. Why is this so?

For this Discussion, you will explore challenges surrounding policy agendas and the reasons some proposals never make it to the decision maker. Additionally, you will propose ways to get the attention of decision makers.

Defending a Position Using Legal Decisions

There has been much written and debated recently on school choice, school vouchers, and the use of public education dollars. Select a position on one of these issues and write a paper about the issue you selected. In your paper, be sure to:

1. Clearly state and define the issue.
2. Summarize the issue’s legal history and describe why it is currently a target for debate.
3. Establish a position on the issue.
4. Defend your position using scholarly resources.

Length: 9 pages, include at least 7 references (four of the references must be from scholarly resources)

AGENDAS AND STEPS FOR ACTIVATING CHANGE

Social change occurs because a person or group gains the attention and support of decisions makers. Decision makers, often in the form of legislators or political representatives, have access to putting issues and policies on the agenda for the business by the assembly. Being placed on an agenda gives you the opportunity to present your advocacy work directly to decision makers and may well determine the success of the development of a policy proposal.

Therefore, policy advocates need to be ready to advocate for their proposal for social change. For this Assignment, you will review 10 issues for activating change and consider how the issues apply to the social problem you selected earlier in the course.

Review Chapter 6 in the Jansson text as needed. Focus on the 10 issues from “The Agenda Funnel” (p. 181).
Timing
Coupling
Framing and finding a title
Negotiating and bargaining
Assembling early sponsors and supporters
Routing
Media coverage
Setting key endorsements
Coalition building
Building momentum

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

Briefly explain the concept of the agenda funnel.
Why is context important when advocating for change to decision makers?
Using the social problem you identified earlier in the course, explain how the 10 issues Jansson outlined are important when trying to activate change regarding the selected social problem. Provide 2–3 sentences for each of the 10 issues:
Timing
Coupling
Framing and finding a title
Negotiating and bargaining
Assembling early sponsors and supporters
Routing
Media coverage
Setting key endorsements
Coalition building
Building momentum
Be sure to incorporate any sources you found related to your selected social problem using standard APA format.

Integration Paper Outline with Main Points/SubheadingsIntegration Paper Outline with Main Points/SubheadingsIntegration Paper Outline with Main Points/Subheadings

If you have never developed an outline of a paper, here are a few pointers to get you started and a helpful link below:

Links to an external site.Note: You may use either an alphanumeric or decimal outline, as long as it is clear to me where each paragraph or subsection begins and ends.

You do not have to include full sentences in your outlines, but it should be obvious what you plan to discuss.

References and outlines: I prefer that you put the references (e.g., Smith & Wesson, 2016) within your outline too, in order to demonstrate that you are using sources to back up your claims. Outlines also allow you to see how you are using sources throughout your paper. You can see where you have gaps in your reasoning and unsupported claims. Finally, you should know by now if you plan to use quotes in any part of your paper, so you should include those in your outline too along with the page # and source as a reminder to include those in the paper. I suggest you use no more than 1 quote in your paper!

HOW YOU WILL BE GRADED ON THE 3 GUIDELINES

2.2: Demonstrate psychological literacy

To get full credit you will show that you found more than 8 peer-reviewed sources central to your question and know how to use them to address your question or purpose. Your sources seem ideally suited to address your question. (5 points)

If you have 8 high-quality peer-reviewed sources and demonstrate a plan for how they support your question or purpose then you have met the expectation. Your sources seem adequate to address your question. (3-4 points)

If you have fewer than 8 peer-reviewed sources or were not able to demonstrate how at least 8 of them relate to your question then you have not met the expectation. Your sources are insufficient to address your question. (0-2 points)

2.3 Engage in innovative and integrative thinking and problem solving.

To get full credit you need to demonstrate that you can integrate ideas from multiple sources in a way that addresses different aspects of your research question or purpose. This should be evident within your outline in multiple sections and go beyond simplistic comparison or description. You must show that you can use your own problem-solving skills to find unique or previously unidentified connections, contradictions, or applications from separate sources. (5)

To meet the expectation, you should integrate ideas from multiple sources at least once and show problem-solving skills to identify and describe connections, contradictions or applications from separate sources. (3-4)

Failure to do more than just describe information from sources without regard for how they fit with other sources would not meet the expectation. (0-2)

4.1 Demonstrate effective writing for different purposes

Effective writing is writing which has a logical flow of ideas and is cohesive. This means it holds together well because there are links between sentences and paragraphs and ideas are supported by credible sources or sound reasoning. It is also effective because it uses appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation. While an outline may not include full sentences, it should show a clear organizational structure with no gaps in logic or unsupported ideas.

Full credit will be given for an outline that is easy to follow and detailed enough so that another reader could use it to write your paper if they were handed your sources. (5)

You will be meeting the expectation if a reader can see where you are going with your paper and is able to see that you have sources to support all your major ideas. (3-4)

If the outline leaves me confused or reveals major gaps in your reasoning or otherwise seems to fall short of addressing your research question or purpose then you have failed to demonstrate effective writing. (0-2)

Close reading is the foundation of literary criticism. For this essay, you need to employ your close reading skills in the service of an argument you wish to make about one of the poems we are reading. Your purpose should be to improve your readers’ understanding of the work. Remember, however, that literary analysis is not the same as paraphrase or summary. How a literary work says what it says is as important as what it says. You must therefore explore the how of the work you have chosen, not just the what. You should assume your readers are familiar with the work. Therefore, you should never bother with summarizing any part of it.

Note that while the class as a whole may be discussing the work you are analyzing, I expect your essay to be both more narrowly focused and to offer further analysis than we may have had time for in class. However, you should certainly apply what you have learned about the author and his or her works in class to your analysis. You may not use secondary sources for this assignment. That means no research. I am not interested in your ability to look up what someone else thinks of a work. I am only interested in your ability to read discerningly and argue persuasively.

Utilize the elements of poetry in order to strengthen your argument: form, diction, mood/tone, rhyme, figurative language (imagery, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, symbolism, idiom, personification, alliteration, etc.), repetition, irony, voice/point of view, allegory, allusion, paradox, juxtaposition, etc.

Your thesis should unite theme and literary technique — something about what the work means and how it conveys what it means — in some way.

Requirements: Your close-reading should be two (2) pages in length, and double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, proper MLA heading, title and citations.

Choose any poem from the poetry section of our textbook. If you want to argue that two poems are doing something very similar, and you wish to compare them to one another, you may do so. However, it can be difficult to provide enough substance on both poems with such a short length requirement. This is a more difficult task because your language will have to be that much more concise in order to cover both poems.

A successful close-reading paper will:

Advance, support, and remain tightly focused on a single, arguable, unobvious claim.
Focus on, and analyze, the language of the text.
Include short quotes only insofar as they support or develop your claim.
Make every word “tell.” Avoid fluff—vast generalizations, cosmic statements, book reports, unnecessary definitions, etc.
Include in-text MLA citations

Conclusion

what pension plan crisis employees are facing in Canada and its policies effective or not to solve problem?

The paper is to be 4,000 to 5,000 words and will be marked on the following factors:
– the thesis statement and introduction – 5%
-structure and technical aspects of the research paper – 10%
-quality of the research – 40%
-quality of the analysis – 40%
-persuasiveness of the argument (supported by the research and analysis) – 5%

From these factors, I would highlight quality of the research and quality of the analysis. The structure and technical aspects include such things as organization and flow of the paper, appprorpiate use of footnotes or endnotes and proper attribution of sources, grammar and clarity of paper. Keep in mind that Turnitin (lower than 12% similarity)will also be used.

the research paper needs to focus on financial accountability. you could pay attention on ts policies and programs provide “value for money” – are they effective? efficient? Do they address the public issue? along same theme, you could explore how executive compensation is developed and whether it is appropriate for that sector
