Composition I-Narrative Essay

Assignment

This essay will be an extended narrative. Make sure that your story has a point. It might be easiest to write your narrative based on a personal story, as opposed to telling the story of someone else. It is acceptable to use “I” in this essay. Don’t forget the lessons you’ve learned on description, as this will be needed in your essay. Consider the length requirement of this essay. Don’t “bite off more than you can chew,” meaning, don’t write a 20 page story when only 3 pages are required. Be sure your essay flows in chronological order. If you’re having trouble coming up with a topic, look at the essay topics on pgs. 410-411 to see if anything strikes a chord with you.

Format

This essay should be 3 pages long. It should be written in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, Times New Roman, size 12 font only and double spaced. The title of your essay needs to be centered. At the top left hand corner of your essay you need:

Your Name

Expectations

I expect this essay to be taken seriously. Make a rough draft and proofread several times! There should be no major grammatical errors, and by major I mean run-on sentences, comma splices and sentence fragments. If your paper contains these errors, your grade on this essay could be in major jeopardy.

Masculinity in Things Fall Apart

I need an an essay on masculinity in Things Fall Apart, and two symbols explaining the theme of it. For the first body paragraph I picked fire for my symbol, and you explain why it describes Okonkwo and the Igbo people. For the second one i picked yams, and you write how this symbol is established and develops, and describes Okonkwo. Then for the 3rd and finally body paragraph, you just wrap and summarize on why these symbols help probe toxic masculinity in this book. Thanks a lot
My thesis is, “In Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, the author used fire and yams to establish the theme of toxic masculinity. (not sure if this is good)
for each body paragraph i need the main idea, topic sentence, evidence idea one, quote and citation, evidence idea two, quote and citation, and a third one is optional. repeat for all three body paragraphs! hopefully that format helps, because i don’t get it

Semiotics

Write an essay discussing the concept of semiotics, and how ideas of symbolism, meaning-making, and identity can be found in the concept(s) of ‘The American Dream. (does not have to be about the American Dream, you can pick any topic).

Here are some ideas:
1) Robinhood utilizes a host of semiotic messages within their platform, in an attempt to take advantage of their clients in order to enhance their own bottom line, with little regard for the well-being of their clients.
2) Nestle Waters, a privatized water conglomerate in the U.S., utilizes semiotic messaging to portray itself as a bastion of community and environmental stewardship, despite the damage it is wreaking on water ecosystems across the U.S.
3) Gfuel is a popular energy drink that presents itself with numerous semiotic messages to overexaggerate the potency and effectiveness when used for gaming which then misguidingly appeals to the younger audience within various gaming communities.
4) The US Military avidly uses semiotics in their advertisements to increase retention and to gain new recruits. This usage of semiotics is inappropriate because it incorrectly depicts the rigors and dangers associated with military service and more importantly have a strong tendency to glorify war.
5) ) The societal emphasis on the concept of “forever” in romantic relationships, coupled with disillusion through pop culture and the prevalence of breakups and divorces have tainted the word “forever”, leading many people to believe that a perfect, permanent relationship is attainable.
6) The law enforcement agency, once viewed as a protective measure for public safety, have evolved to represent the obstruction of justice and the restriction of individual liberties, highlighting the intricate nature of the relationship between the police and society.

Think about the diversity of any reading audience. There will be readers who are younger and not as young. There will be readers who know English as their primary language and those who have English as a second language.
For the discussion this week, you will read and respond to an article written about introverts and extroverts.
Read the article, “Caring For Your Introvert” Download “Caring For Your Introvert” by Jonathan Rauch, with the understanding he is using stereotypes, humor, and sarcasm to make the point that both types need to be aware of each other in caring ways.
In your post, consider how a reader who does not catch that the writer is using those tools might respond.
How will the extrovert react?
Will they feel bullied and stop reading—a writer’s worst outcome?
How will the introvert react?
Will they feel stereotyped as weak and unable to function in the presence of an extrovert?
In a paragraph or two, discuss your reaction and what you feel would be the reaction of the introvert and the extrovert reader.
Now that you have discovered the importance of ethos, be sure to cite any quotes you present from the article. Use APA formatting for the in-text citation and the reference entry at the end of your post.
Estimated time to complete the initial post: 2 hours
